Ready
to Learn
Funded
by the United States Department of Education, the Ready
To Learn initiative creates engaging television programs,
exciting games, playful Web sites, and easy-to-use learning
resources for kids, parents, caregivers, and teachers—all
with the goal of helping children ages 2 to 8 get ready
to read.
All
Ready To Learn initiative programs and materials incorporate
the latest research about the most effective ways for
kids to build reading skills, with a special emphasis
on the needs of children from low income families. Ready
To Learn initiative programs and materials are developed
and distributed by the Corporation
for Public Broadcasting (CPB), PBS
, and the Ready To
Learn Partnership (RTLP). PBS member public television
stations nationwide are important partners in the Ready
To Learn initiative.
PBS
KIDS Raising Readers
The goal of PBS Kids Raising Readers is to provide literacy based television programs for preschoolers. Four are now airing on WNED-TV and ThinkBright and Well (Time Warner 21/Digital 17.3). Sesame Street and Between the Lions will continue to be part of the PBS KIDS Raising Readers initiative. Two new shows, Super Why and Word World are based on extensive scientific research on how children best learn to read. Each show includes colorful graphics, animated characters, and engaging story lines.
This
innovative five year project consists of two programming
awards and the Ready to Learn partnership and one outreach
award designed to locate and connect with kids from
low-income families in 20 target markets. Local public
television stations in these markets are important partners
in the outreach effort.
Assisted
by targeted social marketing research, PBS Raising
Readers partners are reaching out to low income
families at the neighborhood level. CPB and PBS are
working with public television stations to help identify
and forge strategic partnerships with local community
organizations to achieve the broadest-based results.
This targeted community engagement effort is powered
by a Literacy 360º approach, designed to surround
children and families where they live and are most likely
to learn.
WNED
is proud to be one of the 20 demonstration sites across
the country. Locally, WNED's role in this initiative
will benefit its entire viewing area, with
a special focus placed on the 14215 zip code. This is
the designated “literacy
zone” chosen by the Read to Succeed Buffalo Literacy
Coalition.
