My Health Counts! Self-Management

Doctor

My Health Counts: Self-Management focuses on being an active part of your health care. Self-management is about taking responsibility, taking ownership of your body. We really need to make a commitment to changing our lifestyle, then you can address if you're healthy, if you're at risk, if you are medically managed.

The My Health Counts! series is hosted by Susan Hunt. Susan Hunt began her broadcast career in Buffalo, New York, first as a radio news and sports reporter for WGR-AM radio and subsequently as Sandy Beach's news sidekick on WHTT-FM. However, it was her stint as co-host of PM Magazine that, to this day, resonates with Western New York audiences. Since then, Susan has hosted and produced numerous TV programs related to important health issues.

Susan is joined by patient advocate and writer, Trisha Torrey and physician, Dr. Doriane Miller.

Trisha Torrey is a newspaper columnist, radio talk show host, About.com patient empowerment expert, blogger, author and dynamic speaker, is Every Patient's AdvocateSM.

Doriane Miller is the national program director of New Health Partnerships, a demonstration project funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the California Health Care Foundation on collaborative self-management support. She has held this position since November, 2002. She joined Stroger Hospital of Cook County in March of 2005, as Associate Division Chief for General Internal Medicine, focusing her attention on mentoring and staff development.

Essential messages to take away from My Health Counts! Self-Management include:

    • Have a clear understanding of your medical history and know your personal health status.

    • Develop a strategy and a personal plan for improving your health.

    • Health care is not something that happens only in the doctor's office. You and those who personally care for you are half of your health care team.

Your quality of life will be better, you will feel better and may live longer if you build preventative measures into what you do and don't do every day.
