Step 1 in Emergency
Preparedness for caregivers is to make
a plan. Opening up the dialogue
with the person you are caring for about emergency planning
can be difficult and/or emotional.
Here
are some tips to help:
- Make a plan that includes
neighbors and a clear plan for communication. You may know
of someone nearby who doesn't have anyone. Let them know
you are available and make sure they know how to reach you.
- If your loved one is in a
facility, senior housing, or assisted living, become familiar
with their policies and procedures for emergencies or disasters.
All of these facilities have rules and regulations they
must follow.
- Plan for pets. People living
alone with a pet are very reluctant to leave their pets
in an emergency. Most shelters won't take animals. Identify
someone who can take your pet. (contact your local SPCA)
