Build a Kit

Every kit is going to look different based on the needs of the individual. You really need two kinds of kits. One if you are able to stay where you are and a smaller kit we like to call a "GO BAG." This is necessary if you need to be evacuated for any reason. A similar kit should be included in a vehicle if the loved one is still driving. Include a copy of the emergency plan in the kit along with a checklist of what should be in the kit.

Building a Kit Tips:

  • You should have 3-5 days worth of supplies in an evacuation situation
  • 12-15 days supply if you can stay at home
  • Invest in an emergency radio
  • Pay special attention to medication management issues. Stock kit with extra prescription medication and/or other over the counter options. (Talk to a pharmacist about how to do that) This includes not only a list of medications but the pharmacy that dispenses them.
  • Advanced Directives
  • Stress the idea of building the kit over time.
  • Review the plan over time. It is ever changing as living arrangement and health conditions change. Caregivers also can change.
