About The Series

Life Journeys Solutions for Caregivers is a public television series that takes a closer look at the trials and triumphs of family caregiving. With 50 million Americans playing this pivotal role in the life of a sick or elderly loved one, the need for informational and empowering television programming has never been greater. Join host, Susan Hunt, a well-known Buffalo producer and experienced caregiver, explore a wide range of issues and topics that will help families increase their knowledge and skills, while decreasing their levels of stress.

Topics to be covered will include:
  • What it means to be a caregiver
  • The kinds of information and hands-on skills needed to be an effective caregiver
  • Health and legal advocacy skills needed to support a loved one
  • How to tap into the wealth of available community resources

  • Emergency preparedness for caregivers
  • Why it's important to take care of yourself through the process

About the TV Spots

In an effort to reach greater numbers of caregivers in our community with empowering messages about what it means to be a caregiver and how to obtain needed support for this challenging role in life, WNED has produced four awareness TV spots for broadcast on WNED-TV, ThinkBright-TV, and other media outlets.

•  You're a Caregiver (:45)

•  Rosalynn Carter (:30)

•  Testimonials (:48)

•  Shopping (:60)

Community Training

To enable caregivers to gain additional information and skills, American Red Cross, Greater Buffalo Chapter is providing a specially-designed training program for caregivers. This 8-part workshop series addresses a wide range of topics, including:

  • Assisting with Personal Care (hands-on training)
  • Positioning and Helping Your Loved One Move (hands-on training)
  • General Caregiving Skills
  • Home Safety
  • Healthy Eating
  • Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer's Disease or Dementia
  • Legal and Financial Issues
  • Caring for the Caregiver

Class participants meet others in similar caregiving situations - helping to build a network of friends and eliminate feelings of isolation or frustration. For further information on how you can participate in a local training session, call (716) 878-2395.

Web Content

To enhance the value of the Life Journeys television series, and make it easier for busy families to research and explore caregiving issues and solutions at their own convenience, project partners have created companion web sites that feature program information, videostreaming clips from the television series and spots, caregiving workshop topics, and a wide range of web-based resources for family caregivers. "There are four kinds of people in this world:

Those who have been caregivers,

Those who currently are caregivers,

Those who will be caregivers, and

Those who will need caregivers."

~Rosalynn Carter

Resource Kit and DVD Available

In the second year of the project, a specially-created resource kit will be developed for community usage. This kit for caregivers will contain a CAREGIVING GUIDEBOOK, a Life Journeys DVD, a voucher for a free hands-on training class at the American Red Cross-Greater Buffalo Chapter, and listing of community resources. Area nonprofits, community-based organizations, hospitals and health centers, faith-based programs, public libraries, worksites, as well as schools and colleges will be encouraged to obtain a resource kit for grassroots educational uses.

About the Partners

The mission of the American Red Cross-Greater Buffalo Chapter is to improve the quality of human life; to enhance self-reliance and concern for others; and to help people avoid, prepare for and cope with emergencies. For more than 90 years, the American Red Cross-Greater Buffalo Chapter has been assisting the local community through programs and services provided by both staff and a volunteer workforce of upwards of 1,000 people.

For the past 20 years, the Chapter has provided services to seniors and has worked diligently to achieve the same level of community trust and recognition in this line of services it has in others. In recent years, the Chapter has begun to expand its program offerings in Senior Services to include in-home assistance to frail elderly, Medicare/Medicaid fraud prevention training and training for family caregivers.

WNED's mission is to inform, inspire, entertain and educate its publics. In concert with ThinkBright, its new digital learning service, Buffalo 's public broadcasting stations provide a forum for exploring community issues and interests relevant to our bi-national region. As a catalyst for community engagement and empowerment, WNED and ThinkBright are proud to partner on this timely, Life Journeys - Solutions for Caregivers television and outreach initiative.
