About the Show
The Gow School
Gow is an international boarding school for boys outside Buffalo, New York. All that separates these students from other prep school students is dyslexia.

"These are bright kids who often come from families who have a tradition of college education and achievement. They come here with a lot of stress and they're worried..."
Kathy Rose, Teacher and Chairperson of the Reconstructive Language Department at The Gow School

Some 125 private schools across North America are, like Gow, fully designed to teach kids with Dyslexia.

At the core of Gow's academic curriculum is "RL" or Reconstructive Language. It begins with simple phonics- the connections between letters and the sounds they make. These connections do not come easily to the dyslexic mind.

Phonetics, spelling, vocabulary and oral reading are emphasized to promote language remediation. Methods include memorization, drill work, mnemonics, coping mechanisms and practice in application.

Through systematic instruction and intense drilling, these students will re-learn the fundamentals of language.

The students at Gow have the chance to transform the high school experience and move on to college.

"They tend to want to cover up the fact that it's difficult for them...But in a school like this it's important to get to a place where everyone feels safe and everyone's in the same boat."
Dr. Mari Jo Clayback, a Teacher and Director of Research and Assessment at The Gow School
